PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Chris Monroe scored 23 points as George Washington withstood a Providence rally in the last minute to beat the Friars 83-77, on Saturday.
Greg Collucci scored 20 points on five 3-pointers, Jaason Smith had a season-high 19 points and Darnell Miller chipped in 16 points for the Colonials (7-3).
Ryan Gomes, making his second start, led the Friars (5-4) with 16 points. John Linehan, who along with leading scorer Abdul Mills was held out of the starting lineup, had 12 points and Mills added 10.
Monroe hit a 3-pointer with about seven and half minutes remaining to break a 61-61 tie.
Shortly after, Providence coach Tim Welsh was ejected after arguing a call. Standing in front of the scorer's table, Welsh appeared to kick the ball toward an approaching referee. He left the court screaming at the officials.
Providence trailed 79-70 with 1:17 left when it started its comeback. The Friars closed to within two on a dunk by Gomes after a steal by Garnett Thompson off an inbounds play.
After another GW turnover, Christopher Anrin missed an open 3-pointer with 18 seconds left that would have given the Friars the lead.
