LOWELL, MASS. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated at UMass Lowell, 4-3, on Friday, October 26 at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass.
In the first period, the River Hawks got the scoring started when Josh Reed scored from Geoff Schomogyi. The Friars answered and tied the contest at 1-1 when senior Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) scored for the second time this season when he knocked in freshman David Carpentier's (Faribault, Minn.) pass at the 10:30 mark. UMass Lowell went ahead 3-1 on back-to-back goals by Peter Hay and Ed McGrane to close the period.
The River Hawks extended its lead in the second period to 4-1 when Chris Gustafson beat the Friars Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.). PC's Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) brought the Friars one goal closer to UML when he converted a long pass from Omicioli with just 24 seconds remaining in the period.
Senior Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) pulled the Friars to within one goal of the River Hawks with 6:55 remaining when he knocked in lose puck in front of the Lowell goal. The Friars could not even the score, though, and dropped their first HOCKEY EAST league game of the 2001-02 season.
Schaefer recorded 22 saves in the loss while UML's Jimi St. John made 16 saves.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, October 28 when they host UMass Amherst at 4:00 p.m. at PC's Schneider Arena.
