The 2001-02 Providence College women's tennis team returns all but one player from last season's 10-7 squad. The lone omission from last season is Alison Carton, who is the school's all-time leader in singles victories with 78. Despite the team's transition to a non-scholarship program, coach Carl LaBranche expects his team to be very competitive and pose a threat at the New England Championships, an event that the Friars have won five times. Leading the way for the Friars will be seniors Brooke Rubin (Cranston, R.I.) and captain Gina Vlasek (Atlanta, Ga.). Rubin, who posted an 18-9 mark at No. 1 position in 2000-01, will again be the top seed for the Friars. Rubin could vault ahead of Carton in the all-time singles victories list. Rubin currently has 63 wins, 15 shy of tying the record. Vlasek enjoyed a 17-8 mark last season and will play at the No. 2 position for the Friars. In addition, Vlasek recorded a 9-12 doubles record and will likely combine with Rubin to play at the No. 1 position this season. At the 2000 New England Championships, Rubin, Carton and Vlasek captured the singles titles at No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The team of Carton and Rubin captured the title at the No. 1 doubles position. Battling for the No. 3 spot will be seniors Kate Lafayette (Norwich, Conn.) and Erin Haley (Johnston, R.I.) as well as junior Courtney Maloy (Cotuit, Mass). Lafayette enjoyed a strong season, posting a 13-12 singles mark. Maloy registered a 10-12 singles record and teamed with Haley to post an 11-6 mark at the No. 3 doubles position, the second best doubles record for the Friars. Haley also recorded a 10-13 singles record. Competition for the No. 6 singles position and all three doubles spots will be strong as six veterans and four freshmen will battle for starting positions. Sophomore Beth Bryson (W. Springfield, Mass.) completed her first season with a 2-0 singles record. Juniors Alyson Gill (Narragansett, R.I.) and Karen Tremaine (Berlin, N.H.) saw limited action last season, but are poised to make more of an impact this season. Sophomore Eleana Stayer (Portland, Ore.) will look to improve after her freshman season in which she saw action at singles and doubles. Katie Viola (South Hadley, Mass.) and Nicole Bolduc (Hollis, N.H.) round out the returning crew. The Friars also welcome four freshmen. Katy Bednar (Marlboro, Mass.), Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.), Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Mass.) and Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) will add to the depth to the team. The Friars again will be one of the favorites at the New England Championships this fall and with strong veteran experience the team will make a run at the BIG EAST Championships.
