NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- Peter Fregoe scored his second goal of the night at 1:29 of overtime to give Providence College a , 4-3, win over Merrimack in HOCKEY EAST action at the Volpe Complex in North Andover, Mass.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead when John Pyliotis stole a clearing pass in the Friar zone and fired a wrist shot high into the right corner of the net at the 4:00 mark. The Friars continued to hurt themselves with careless handling of the puck as another costly turnover led to the Warriors' second goal at 12:19 of the first period. Pyliotis again stole a pass while forechecking to set up the goal. He sent a pass to Greg Classen who slipped a backhander past Boyd Ballard. The Friars got on the scoreboard at the 14:55 mark of the first period when Josh MacNevin sent a shot toward the net that Jon DiSalvatore tipped over Merrimack goaltender Cris Classen.
The Friars tied the game at 2-2 with Nick Lent's fifth goal of the season at 3:10 of the second period. Adam Lee won a faceoff in the Merrimack zone back to Jason Ialongo who sent a pass to Lent which he wristed in from the bottom of the circle.
PC took its first lead of the game when Fregoe was left all alone in front of the Merrimack net to collect a rebound and lift it high over Classen at the 2:06 mark of the third period. The Friar lead did not last long as Chris Halecki beat Ballard with a backhander from the right side at 5:39 of the third.
Fregoe provided the heroics in overtime for the Friars when he took a wrap around off the boards and broke down the ice on a two-on-one. With the defenseman covering DiSalvatore Fregoe snapped a shot that beat Classen through the five hole for the game winner.
With the win, Providence improved to 14-13-1 overall and 6-10 in HOCKEY EAST action, while Merrimack fell to 9-15-4 overall and 4-10-4 in league play.
