Women's Hockey Defeats Yale, 7-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the Yale Bulldogs, 7-1 in women's ECAC hockey action, on Sunday February, 27 at Schneider Arena. Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.) recorded a hat trick to lead the Friars.

Tabb started the PC offense rolling as she lit the lamp at 9:49 of the first period, assisted by Erin Cannon (Potsdam, N.Y.) and Christa Talbot (Lake Forest Calif.). Senior Katherine Cahill (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) each scored a goal in the opening period.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second period. Three minutes into the third, Tabb struck again, beating Yale goaltender Katie Hirte, assisted by Jennifer Bill (Minnetrista, Minn.). At 12:14 Butsch added her second goal of the game, from Kerstin Matthews (Westford, Mass.) and Valerie Bono (Woburn, Mass.). Minutes later Tabb completed her hat trick on a pass from senior Alain Frankiewicz (Houston, Texas), her third assist of the afternoon.

Yales' Sara Wood notched lone Bulldog goal, at the 17:00 minute mark of the third.

With 12 seconds remaining in the contest, Cahill registered the last Friars goal, her second of the game, from seniors Colleen Doherty (Arlington Mass.) and Stacy Kreger (Indianapolis, Ind.)

Providence goaltender Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) made 16 saves for the victory, while Hirte stopped 32 in the loss.

With the win, Providence improves to 18-9-3 overall, 12-7-3 in the ECAC, the Bulldogs fall to 6-20-1 and 2-19-1 in league play.

Providence will return to action on Friday, March 3, at Boston College at 7:00 p.m.
