PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated in the 2000 BIG EAST opener by Seton Hall University, 74-61, on Thursday night in Providence, R.I.

The Friars' (4-4 overall/0-1 BIG EAST) loss snapped a three-game win streak. PC led after the first 20 minutes of play, 36-33, based largely on a 13-for-16 effort from the free throw line, while the Pirates (4-4 overall/1-0 BIG EAST) shot just four free throws.

Seton Hall used a match-up zone defense in the second half to limit the touches of Providence freshman Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.), who scored 11 of her team-high 15 points in the first half. The Friars hit just nine-of-30 field goal attempts in the second half, while the Pirates outscored, 41-25, and outrebounded, 33-13, PC.

The Pirates' Leslie Ardon led all scores with 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor. Arminda Moreno added 15 points and 10 rebounds in a complete-game, 40-minute effort, while senior Starr Fuller saw her first action of the season, logging 10 minutes in the second half while scoring 11 points with six rebounds.

Providence got 10 points from freshman Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.), who added six assists and received 10 points from senior Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.).

The Friars have the next 12 days off from competition for finals and return to action on December 20th when they host Holy Cross for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
