Women's Ice Hockey Ranked Ninth In The Country

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team is ranked ninth in the nation according to the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll released on Tuesday, December 6.

The Friars earned three wins last week and extended their winning streak to seven games. It is PC's longest winning streak since the Friars won 10 in a row to end the 1995-96 season before falling to New Hampshire in the ECAC Championship in five overtimes. On Wednesday, November 29, PC defeated Boston College, 4-0. Junior forward Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scored twice to lead the Friars to the victory.

Providence earned a 1-0 victory over Maine on Saturday, December 2. Sophomore forward Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) scored the game's lone goal on a pass from sophomore ./. Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Mass.).

The Friars capped the week with a 2-1 win versus New Hampshire. PC downed the then eighth-ranked Wildcats on two goals from Mathias.

PC has been led this season on offense by senior forward Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.). Tabb is the ECAC's overall leading scorer with 24 points (seven goals, 17 assists). Tabb's leadership has been complemented by fellow first liner Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) who is second amongst ECAC freshmen in overall scoring with 13 points (four goals, nine assists).

Providence returns to action on Saturday, December 9 when the Friars travel to Princeton for a 2:00 p.m. faceoff.
