WHO'S HOT: The Friars' penalty-killing unit was a perfect 9-9 in a pair of ties on November 24-25 versus Colorado College and Denver.
PC GOALTENDERS.. The duo of Boyd Ballard and Nolan Schaefer have posted a 7-2-3 record with a 2.04 goals against average and a .938 save percentage. The pair also have posted two shutouts and have recorded a league high 203 saves.
SCHAEFER REMAINS SOLID... Sophomore Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) posted 37 saves in a 1-1tie at Colorado College on November 24. In 65` minutes of play versus the ninth-ranked Tigers, Schaefer allowed just one goal. In seven games, Schaefer has posted a 5-1-1 record, a 1.55 goals against average and an .954 save percentage.
ROBINSON RECORDS TWO POINTS... Freshman Mike Robinson (Biggar, Saskatchewan) posted his first two collegiate points in the Friars' 3-3 tie at Denver on November 25. The rookie centerman tallied his first career goal in the first period at Denver and assisted on Stepehen Wood's goal in the third period.
FRIARS POST A PAIR OF TIES IN COLORADO...The Friars' record stands at 7-2-3 after a 1-1 tie at Colorado College on November 24 at World Arena and a 3-3 tie at Denver on November 25 at Magness Arena. On November 24, the Friars tied their second contest of the season at Colorado College. Senior J.J. Picinic (Fort Lee, N.J.) netted the Friars' lone goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Marc Suderman (Regina, Saskatchewan). Sophomore Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) recorded 37 saves for PC. On November 25, the Friars recorded their second consecuitve tie, 3-3, at Denver's Magness Arena. Freshman Mike Robinson (Biggar, Saskatchewan) tallied one goal and one assist, his first two collegiate points, to lead the Friars' offense. Freshman Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) and senior Matt Libby (Saco, Maine) scored one goal each for the Friars. Wood's goal was his first as a member of the Friars. Boyd Ballard stopped 24 shots and was named the game's first star.
CONSECUTIVE TIES...PC's consecuitve ties versus Colorado College on November 24 and Denver on November 25 marked the first time the Friars have posted consecutive ties since the 1994-95 season. The 1994-95 season was Head Coach Paul Pooley's first season with the Friars. The squad posted consecutive ties on February 5, 1995 versus Merrimack and on February 10, 1999 at Northeastern. On February 5, PC skated to a a 2-2 versus Merrimack at Schneider Arena and on February 10, the Friars and the Huskies battled to a 4-4 tie at Matthews Arena.
FRESHMAN FIRSTS...Freshman Mike Robinson and freshman Stephen Wood each tallied their first collegiate goals in the Friars' 3-3 tie versus Denver on November 25. Robinson notched his first tally on a slap shot from the right face-off circle at the 8:36 mark of the first period. Wood scored his first career goal on a wrap-around at 12:58 of the third period.
PICINIC CONTINUES TO SHINE... Junior J.J. Picinic (Fort Lee, N.J.) registered the Friars' only goal in a 1-1 tie at Colorado College on November 24. On November 17, Picinic's tally was the game-winning goal in the Friars' 3-1 win over the Huskies. On November 18, Picinic notched two goals and two assists in the squad's 4-2 victory at Matthews Arena. It marked his first career multiple-point game. On the season, Picinic has tallied eight goals and two assists in 12 games. Picinic has tallied at least one goal in seven of the Friars' first 12 games. Entering the 2000-01 season. Picinic had registered just two goals and eight assists in 40 games.
TOUGH AT HOME...In PC's last 13 games at Schneider Arena the Friars have posted a 10-1-2 record, dating back to February 4, 2000. The squad's only loss was a 3-2 defeat to Maine on March 4, 2000. This season, the Friars are 6-0-1 at Schneider Arena. PC's all-time record at Schneider is 262-160-29 (.613).
FRIARS VS. RANKED OPPONENTS...This season the Friars have recorded a 5-1-2 mark against ranked teams. PC has defeated Lake Superior (5-1), Maine (5-3), UNH (3-1) and Northeastern (3-1, 4-2). The has recorded ties against Boston University (4-4) and Colorado College (1-1).
NEXT FOR FOR THE FRIARS... The Friars will host Merrimack on Friday, December 1 at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, December 2, Providence will travel Merrimack's Volpe Complex for a 7:00 p.m. game.
THE PROVIDENCE-MERRIMACK SERIES... Friday's game will be the 78th meeting between the two schools. Providence College holds a 60-15-2 lead in its series against Merrimack. In the most recent meeting between the two teams, PC defeated Merrimack, 4-3, in overtime at the Volpe Complex on February 5, 2000. PC's last loss against the Warriors was a 4-2 defeat at the Volpe Complex on December 4, 1999. The two teams first met on February 13, 1960 with PC defeating Merrimack, 7-1, at the Billerica Forum.
AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... The Friars have posted 22-7-1 record against the Warriors at Schneider Arena. PC won the first meeting between the two schools at Schneider Arena, 4-2, on Jan. 20, 1973. The Friars' last win against Merrimack at Schneider Arena was a 4-1 victory on December 3, 1999. The last time Merrimack defeated PC at Schneider Arena was Nov. 5, 1994 (4-3).
AT THE VOLPE COMPLEX... PC holds a 16-5-1 record against the Warriors at the Volpe Complex. PC won the first meeting between the two schools at the Volpe Complex, 10-3, on Nov. 28, 1972. The Friars' last win at the Volpe Complex was a 4-3 overtime decision on Feb. 5, 2000. The last time Merrimack defeated PC at the Volpe Complex was December 4, 1999 (4-2).
LAST SEASON VS. MERRIMACK... On December 3, 1999 the Friars earned a 4-1 victory against Merrimack at Schneider Arena. Mike Lucci led the Friar offense with his first collegiate two-goal game. Fernando Pisani and Peter Fregoe also scored for PC. Goaltender Nolan Schaefer made 30 stops in the win. The following night, Merrimack defeated the Friars, 4-2, at the Volpe Complex. Jon DiSalvatore scored both PC goals. Schaefer registered 22 saves in the loss. On February 5, 2000 the Friars defeated the Warriors, 4-3, in overtime at the Volpe Complex. Peter Fregoe tallied two goals for the Friars, including the overtime game-winner. Jon DiSalvatore and Nick Lent scored one goal each for PC. Boyd Ballard stopped 29 shots in the win.
