PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College freshman center Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y./The Ursuline School) was named the BIG EAST Conference's Rookie of the Week on Monday, November 20th by the league office.
Wilcox helped the Friars to a 1-1 season-opening record at the 2000 Sheraton Four Points Basketball Classic, held in Minneapolis, Minn. on November 18 and 19. On the 18th, Providence faced Central Michigan University and Wilcox recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds as the Friars won, 78-55. Wilcox also added two assists and two steals in the victory.
In the tournament's championship game against host Minnesota, Wilcox scored a career-high 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a shot in 20 minutes of action, but she was unable to keep Providence from losing, 88-60, to the Golden Gophers. For her efforts in the two games, Wilcox was named to the all-tournament team.
Through two games, Wilcox is second on the squad in scoring with a 12.0 points-per-game average, is the team-leader averaging 9.5 rebounds and is shooting a team-best 64% (nine-for-14) from the floor.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25 when they travel to California to face the University of the Pacific and Santa Clara. Both contests will be played at Santa Clara, with the Friars facing Pacific on Friday at 11:00 p.m. (est) and Santa Clara on Saturday at 11:00 p.m.
