Women's Hockey Defeats St. Cloud In Overtime, 4-3

SAINT PAUL, MINN... --The eighth-ranked Providence College Friars defeated the St. Cloud Huskies, 4-3, in women's hockey action, on January 22, at St. Cloud's National Hockey Center.

With four seconds remaining in overtime, freshman Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) picked up a loose puck in the slot and beat St. Cloud goaltender Sondra Diaz-Arnzten, to lift the Friars to the 4-3 victory.

Sophomore Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead at the 19:36 mark of the first period. Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.) and Jennifer Bill (Minnestrista, Minn.) assisted on the play.

St. Cloud took a 2-1 lead after two periods of play, on goals by Rachel Denner and Abby Cooper. The Friars fought back taking a 3-2 advatntage, on two goals early in the third. Tabb scored her 15 goal of the season from Christa Talbot (Lake Forest, Calif.) at 4:51, than Jackie Tamsin scored a power-play goal at 6:10, with Valerie Bono (Woburn, Mass.) and Mathias assisting.

The Saint's Denner scored her second goal of the game, at the 9:19 mark of the third, tying the contest at three.

Starting golatender Brigid Keady (Glencoe, Ill.) recorded 11 saves in two periods of play, while Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) stopped 21 shots in the final period and overtime. The Saint's Diaz-Arntzen turned away 32 shots in the loss.

Providence record stands at 13-5-3 overall, 7-4-3 in the ECAC, the Saints drop to 7-12-2 overall, and 2-11-2 in the WCHA.

The Friars will return to action on Jan. 29 , when they host ECAC foe Cornell, at 2:00 p.m.
