Providence, Rhode Island - Three members of the 1999 Providence College baseball team have been selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association's All-American team which was announced at the College World Series.

Leading the way for the Friars as a First Team selection was rightfielder KEITH REED (Jr., Yarmouthport, Mass.), a first-round selection of the Baltimore Orioles, who was the only BIG EAST Player chosen for the First Team and the first Providence College player ever named First Team All-American by the Coaches Association.

He was joined by pitcher MARC DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) and leftfielder MIKE SCOTT (So., Darien, Conn.) who were both selected to the Third Team. In all, eight BIG EAST players were chosen to the three All-American teams.

Only Providence College and Florida State University had three players selected among the 59 players chosen to the ABCA/Rawlings All-American teams.

Reed, DesRoches and Scott led the PC baseball program, in its final year of competition, to its greatest season ever with a 49-16 record, the BIG EAST Championship and a trip to the NCAA Regional Finals in Tallahassee, Florida.

Reed, the BIG EAST and ECAC Player of the Year was a unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST selection and All-New England choice who hit .398 for the year and had 17 home runs with a school record 79 runs batted in. He stole 15 of 17 bases and closed his Providence career tied for first in career home runs with 36.

DesRoches was the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player of the BIG EAST Tournament where he won two games in helping PC to its second league title. The big righthander was 14-2 overall with a 2.86 ERA in 17 appearances. He led the Friars' staff with nine complete games and struck out a single season record 87 batters in 103.2 innings. Along the way he was also a First Team All-BIG EAST choice and a First Team All-New England selection.

Scott, who sat out last season with a knee injury, led the Friars with a .420 average and led the nation in triples with 13. His 120 hits were among the national leaders. The BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, Scott had 21 doubles and hit five home runs with 64 rbi's as the Friars' leadoff hitter. He was also a First Team All-BIG EAST and All-New England choice, was selected to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team and was named to the NCAA All-Regional Team at Tallahassee, Florida.

The ABCA All-America Team is collegiate baseball's oldest selections dating back to 1949. The 277 Division I coaches have the opportunity to nominate and vote on these selections which are initially compiled into eight All-Region teams. These teams are then finalized as the first, second and third team All-America teams by the ABCA's NCAA Division I All-America and Coach of the Year Committee.
