KINGSTON, R.I.--The University of Rhode Island Rams hammered out 17 hits including five home runs, used five Providence errors and nine walks to produce 23 runs as they handed the Friars their worst loss since a 24-5 loss to Texas Tech in the 1995 NCAA Midwest Regionals.
URI put up eight unearned runs in the second inning and it was all downhill from there. PC starter, Andy Scott lasted just 2.1 innings giving up nine runs, but only one was earned. Freshman George Colli followed and gave up eight runs over 2.2 innings, but only three of those were earned. Brett Donovan and Scott Swanjord each pitched a scoreless inning before Erik Carlson was touched for six runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Ram centerfielder Adam Kessner led URI with a pair of three-run homers and seven rbi's in the game. Left fielder Keith Lanzilli had a four-hit game and right fielder Rob Farrell drove in four runs. Rhode Island used its best pitcher, Jay Krystofolski who evened his record at 4-4 as he pitched five scoreless innings with nine strikeouts.
The Friars broke through on reliever Sean Carroll with a two-run homer from Scott Friedholm in the eighth and a three-run homer from Angelo Ciminiello in the ninth. Ciminiello also had four hits in the game.
The loss drops PC to 22-12-1 on the season while URI evens its record at 14-14. PC travels to Boston College on Wednesday for a single BIG EAST game at Commander Shea Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
