Providence Swimmers Finish 11th at BIG EAST Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Swimming Teams both placed 11th at the BIG EAST Championship held at Pittsburgh, PA, February 18-21. The University of Pittsburgh men and the University of Notre Dame women captured the 1998 crowns. The men scored 126 points while the women tallied 83 points.
Junior Jed Michnowicz led the Friars breaking four individual records and helping two medley relays to new school records. Senior Kurt Yates also broke two school records - the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Michnowicz broke four of his own records including a 1:52.39 mark in the 200 back, a 45.98 mark in the 100 free, a 1:40.92 mark in the 200 free, and a 4:29.11 mark in the 500 free. The junior also helped the 200 and 400 medley relays to school records. Yates, had the meet of his life as he broke three and four-year old school records. For his efforts, he was named Providence College Male Athlete of the Week.
Michnowicz placed 4th overall in the 500 free which was the best finish by a Friar athlete in more than 10 years. He also recorded a sixth place finish in the 200 free.
Senior Shannon Najjar recorded a personal best in the 200 fly as she finsihed 14th overall with a time of 2:08.93. The women's 800 Free-Relay finished eighth overall while the 400 Free-Relay finished ninth best.
