The Friars took a 1-0 lead on their first power-play when Cranston's Jason Ialongo blasted a shot from the right point past UMass goaltender Scott Fankhouser at 10:46 of the first period. PC quickly increased its lead when Jon Cameron broke in and backhanded a shot through Fankhouser's pads at the 11:12 mark of the first period. The River Hawks cut the Friars' lead in half with a power-play goal at 13:18. Jeff Boulanger's shot from 15 feet in front of the net trickled over PC netminder Boyd Ballard's stick and into the goal to make the score 2-1.
Mike Farrell increased the Friars' lead in the second period when he finished off a two-on-one break in during a short-handed situation at 13:47. The River Hawks netted their second goal of the game with 31 seconds remaining in the second period when Kevin Kotyluk came out of the right corner and wristed a low shot that went through Ballard's pads.
The Friars continued their strong special teams play in the third period when Jerry Keefe wristed in a power-play goal at the 1:13 mark. West Warwick's brother tandem of Mike and Drew Omicioli combined to tally the Friars' fifth goal of the game at 2:53 of the third. Mike Omicioli broke in on the left side and fed a pass to Drew Omicioli who one-timed a shot past Fankhouser.
With the win, Providence raised its record to 14-12 overall and 9-8 in HOCKEY EAST, while UMass-Lowell fell to 14-13 overall and 6-11 in league standings.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6 against UMass-Lowell at PC's Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
