ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Providence College Friars scored four unanswered goals in the third period, including two by Troy Lake, to break a 3-3 tie and earn a 7-3 win against Cornell in men's hockey action on Tuesday, January 5, 1999 in Ithaca, N.Y.
Cornell's Kyle Knopp got the first goal of the game when he finished off a two-on-one break in by one-timing a pass from Ryan Moynihan past PC goaltender Boyd Ballard at 10:05 of the first period. Thirty seconds later, the Big Red struck again as David Kozier wristed in a shot from the right face-off circle that beat Ballard to the glove side.
Heath Gordon cut Cornell's lead in half with the Friars' first goal of the game. Gordon broke in on Cornell goaltender Matt Underhill and lifted a backhander by the goalie at 1:47 of the second. Cornell regained its two-goal advantage as Frank Kovac wristed in a shot through a scrum in front of the net at the 4:32 mark of the second period. However, PC battled back and tied the game with goals from Fernando Pisani at 5:53 of the second and West Warwick's Mike Omicioli at 9:53 of the second.
Lake gave the Friars their first lead of the game when he tipped Josh MacNevin's blast from the point at 5:05 of the third for what proved to be the game winner. Matt Libby scored on a wrister from the point at 7:07 of the third before Lake netted his second of the period at 9:50 to give the Friars a three-goal lead. Nick Lent added an insurance for PC at 18:14 for the Friars' seventh goal of the game.
Ballard played strong in net for PC, recording 21 stops.
With the win, Providence raised its record to 8-8 overall , while Cornell fell to 7-5-2 overall .
Providence returns to action on Friday, Jan. 8 against Northeastern at Boston, Mass. at 7:00 p.m.
