PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Greg LaPointe scored 16 points to lead Vanderbilt, which didn't have a field goal over the final 4 1/2 minutes, to a 72-66 victory over Providence in the inaugural CoSIDA Classic on Monday night.

The loss at the Providence Civic Center spoiled Tim Welsh's first game as coach of the Friars. Welsh, who was at Iona the last three seasons, replaced Pete Gillen, who went to Virginia.

Vanderbilt, which fell behind 17-2 in the game's opening 3 1/2 minutes, took the lead for good at 37-35 on a basket down low by LaPointe with 16:16 to play. Within five minutes, the Commodores, who took full advantage of their size down low, had the lead up to 52-42 on a drive by Sam Howard.

The lead reached as much as 14 points, 65-51, on two free throws by LaPointe with 3:21 left. The Commodores went 9-of-15 from the free throw line over the final 4 1/2 minutes and Providence was able to get as close as 71-66 on a 3-pointer by Sean Connolly with 19 seconds left.

Dan Langhi, who was just 3-of-11 from the field but 9-of-11 at the foul line, added 15 points for Vanderbilt, which shot 45 percent (22-of-49) and finished with a 35-28 rebound advantage, while Atiba Prater had 10 points.

Jamel Thomas led the Friars with 22 points, but nine came in the opening 3 1/2-minute run and nine came in the final 3:10 when the Commodores were more concerned with running time off the clock, taking just three shots.
