Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - PC's senior forward Jamel Thomas led four players in double figures as the Providence College Friars stopped the North Carolina State Wolfpack, 80-69, in front of 8,911 fans at the Providence Civic Center.

The win, the Friars' third in a row since dropping two close ones in the opening CoSIDA CLASSIC, improves PC to 3-2 on the year. For the Wolfpack, it was their first loss of the season and sends them to 3-1 for the year.

Again, PC used a tenacious pressing and trapping defense to jump start their first half offense as the Friars forced NC State into 16 first half turnovers and 28 in the game. The Friars led by as many as 19 in the first half (34-15 with 5:36 left). With the score tied 10-10 at 13:24, Providence went on a 24-5 run highlighted by the tenacious defense of Corey Wright, some easy layups by Llewellyn Cole and some long bombs by Sean Connolly to open the 19 point lead.

Everytime NC State got the lead to 10, the Friars seemed to answer. Thomas led a balanced offense with 19 points and seven rebounds. Connolly was near perfect with 17 points (4-7 FG, 3-5 3PT, and 6-6 FT) while Wright had a career high 14 points and seven assists to pace the PC attack. Cole chipped in 12 points and four rebounds off the bench.

The Wolfpack got as close as six with 54 seconds left in the game, but the Friars made their free throws to ice the win. NC State got 19 from Kenny Inge in the game along with 11 rebounds. Center Ron Kelley added 18 and Adam Harrington had 14 in the defeat. PC forced NC State point guard Justin Gainey into nine turnovers in the game.
