Providence, R.I. - Providence College baseball players Keith Reed (Jr., Auburn, Mass.) and Mike Scott (Fr., Darien, Conn.) have been named the BIG EAST's Co-Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 7th.
The two outfielders helped Providence to a 6-2 record on the Friars spring trip last week and have gotten the Friars off to a 9-3 start so far this spring.
Reed, PC's rightfielder was 19-38 (.500) with three doubles, six homers and 20 rbis in the eight games. He was also 5-for-6 in the stolen base category. Reed had a two homers and a career high six rbi game in PC's 17-1 win over Northwood on February 27th. He drove in four runs with a double and homer in a 7-6 win over Dayton on March 1st. He also drove in three runs versus 18th-ranked Florida International, St. Bonaventure and Wagner College. He currently has an eight-game hitting streak. He shared the honor with Boston College's Sean McGowan who also hit .500 on the week.
Scott, who sat out last season with a knee injury, has stepped right in to the Friars' lineup and made an impact. On the eight-game trip, Scott was 16-for-39 (.436) with 13 runs scored, four doubles and six rbi's. He was 5-for-7 in the win over Northwood (2/27) with three rbi's. He had six multiple hit games on the trip and had a ten-game hitting streak snapped on Saturday versus Bucknell. He leads the team with a .442 average (23-52) with ten rbi's. Scheduled to be the Friars' regular leftfielder, Scott has played flawlessly in centerfield filling in for the injured Jason Hairston.
The Friars are scheduled to open the home schedule on Wednesday, March 10th when they host Central Connecticut (weather permitting) at 2:30 p.m. at PC's Hendricken Field. The Friars then travel to Coppin State on Friday, play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday at Delaware.
