Friars To Open BIG EAST Tournament Versus Seton Hall

Providence, R.I. - The Providence College baseball team will open the 1999 BIG EAST Tournament on Wednesday, May 19th as the number three seed. The Friars will face the Seton Hall Pirates, the league's fourth place team, in the at 7:00 p.m. at Waterfront Park in Trenton, New Jersey.

The Friars finished the regular season with a 43-13 overall record and were 18-8 in league play. Seton Hall finished the regular season with a 31-17-1 mark and closed out the BIG EAST campaign with a 14-11 record.

The Friars and Pirates met three times during the regular season at Seton Hall with PC taking two of the three games. On April 17th, the two teams split a doubleheader with the Friars winning the first game, 2-0, before dropping the nightcap, 11-3. On Sunday, April 18th, the Friars won a 10-8 game. The two schools have met five times in BIG EAST Tournament play with Seton Hall holding a 3-2 edge in the series.

This is PC's second consecutive appearance and the Friars tenth trip to the BIG EAST Tournament where they have a 15-17 all-time record. PC has won the championship once, finished second three times and third once. That occured last season when the Friars were 2-2, losing to St. John's in the opener, then beating Rutgers and West Virginia before falling to Notre Dame.

Notre Dame finished the season in first place with a 41-14 record overall and were 20-5 in the league. The Fighting Irish will face the sixth place team, West Virginia at Noon on May 19th in the first game of the tournament. The Mountaineers were 29-26 on the year and 12-13 in league play.

Rutgers finished in second place, one game ahead of the Friars with a 19-7 league record and a 35-17 overalll mark. The Scarlet Knights will face the fifth place team, St. John's in the second game of the tournament at 3:30 p.m. The Red Storm was 29-20-2 overall and finished 13-11-1 after taking two of three games against Notre Dame on the final weekend.

The double elimination tournament will continue on Thursday with three games. At Noon, the loser of the Notre Dame-West Virginia game will face the loser of the Rutgers-St. John's game. At 3:30 p.m., the winner of the Notre Dame-West Virgina game will face the loser of the Providence-Seton Hall game. The 7:00 p.m. game will feature the winner of the Rutgers-St. John's game against the winner of the Providence-Seton Hall game.
