Providence, R.I. - Senior righthander Marc DesRoches set a Providence College record for wins in a season as he helped the Friars sweep a BIG EAST doubleheader versus the St. John's Red Storm at PC's Hendricken Field on Sunday afternoon.

DesRoches ran his record to 11-1 overall, 7-0 in the BIG EAST as he pitched a five-hitter in the Friars' 9-1 opening game win. The senior from Cambridge, Massachusetts struck out seven and walked one in pitching his seventh complete game of the season. The 11 wins passes Todd Incantalupo's single season mark of 10 set in both 1995 and 1996.

The Friars staked DesRoches to a 3-0 lead in the second on an rbi single by Neal McCarthy and a two-run homer by freshman Jamie Athas, his fifth of the season of starter and loser Keith Stamler (4-5).

Providence got five more in the third on five hits and two Red Storm errors as Mike O'Keefe, Keith Reed, McCarthy and Coley O'Donnell each produced run scoring singles in the inning.

Reed and McCarthy paced the PC attack with three hits each with McCarthy and Athas providing two rbi's each. Red Storm right fielder Pete Graham drove in their only run with a single in the top of the fifth.

Game two saw the Friars use ten hits, nine walks, two hit batsmen and four St. John's errors to take a 12-9 win.

Senior righthander Rob Corraro went 7-and-2/3 innings giving up nine hits and eight runs to get the win and go to 7-3 on the year. He left with the Red Storm rallying in the top of the eighth. Todd Murray faced four batters and couldn't get anyone out before sophomore lefthander Andy Scott came in to pitch out of a bases loaded jam. He left two more runners on in the ninth to pick up his third save of the year.

Patrick Collins took the loss to fall to 3-4. He gave up eight runs, but only one was earned in the defeat.

The Friars were led by sophomore Mike Scott who was 3-for-4 with four runs scored in the game. O'Keefe drove in three runs for PC while Paul Costello and McCarthy each had a pair. McCarthy's came via his 12th homer of the season, a two-run shot in the Friars four run fourth.

Anthony Sutter and Charles Bilezikjian each had two hits for the Red Storm while Eric Potts hit his fifth homer of the season.

The sweep improves the Friars to 39-13 overall, 14-8 in BIG EAST play while St. John's falls to 23-17-1 on the season and 10-8 in league play.

The two teams will play a single game at 12:00 noon on Monday at Hendricken Field.
