Providence, R.I. - The Providence College Friars and the University of Pittsburgh Panthers split a BIG EAST doubleheader at PC's Hendricken Field on Sunday afternoon as the Friars won the first game, 5-3 with the Panthers winning the second game, 18-4.

The split gives Providence a 22-7 record, 1-3 in the BIG EAST while Pittsburgh is now 11-9 overall and 3-1 in league play.

Providence got strong pitching from senior Marc DesRoches as he pitched a seven inning complete game to improve to 5-1 on the year. He surrendered just four hits, gave up three runs, two earned while walking one and striking out five.

The Friars rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a four-run sixth inning against Pittsburgh starter Jory Coughenour. With two outs and a runner on Neal McCarthy on first, Paul Costello singled down the right field line scoring McCarthy. Designated hitter Coley O'Donnell followed with a single up the middle to put the Friars in front, 3-2. Following a Jamie Athas single, catcher Dan Conway doubled to center driving in Athas and pinch runner Matt Chiardelli for the 5-3 Providence victory.

Game two saw Pittsburgh pound out 20 hits on the way to an 18-4 win. First baseman Steve Dickinson was 3-for-6 with a home run and five rbi's. Left fielder Chris Delsignore was 2-for-3 with a pair of homers and a five rbi-game. Second baseman Lou Melluci has four hits and three rbi's to add to the Panthers attack.

Providence trailed 10-0 before getting its four runs off reliever Kevin Lazeski in the sixth. Starter Matt Shoemaker pitched five innings and improved to 2-2 on the year. Sophomore Andy Scott took the loss for the Friars to fall to 2-1 on the season.

The Friars are in action on Monday when they travel to Holy Cross for a 3:00 p.m. game against the Crusaders.
