On October 6, 1998 the Providence College administration announced that it would discontinue the baseball team as a varsity sport following the 1999 season. The decision was made in order to comply with Title IX regulations regarding gender equity in athletics. Baseball is the oldest sport at Providence College and has gone to the NCAA regionals twice in the last ten years. The final home game played at Hendricken Field will be against Villanova on May 15, 1999. Other sports that were discontinued by the college were golf and men's tennis.
HICKEY REACHES CENTURY MARK...With the May 15th 7-4 win over Villanova, Friars' head coach Charlie Hickey recorded the 100th victory of his career in just his third season as head coach at Providence. Hickey's career record stands at 100-58-1. He served five years as the assistant coach to Paul Kostacopoulos at Providence from 1992 to 1996.

40 WINS...PC's 43 wins this season mark just the second time in school history that the Friars have won 40 or more games in a season. The most wins in PC history are 44 and that was done by the 1995 team that received an At-Large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 43 wins are the most ever in the regular season as the 1995 team had three BIG EAST Tournament wins among the 44 wins that season.
RECORD STREAK...The Friars put together a school record 15-game winning streak between March 5th and March 24th. The previous record was 14 set during the 1995 campaign. PC set the record with an 8-4 win over the University of Rhode Island on March 24th.
DOCTOR BASEBALL...Senior third baseman Angelo Ciminiello (Sr., St. James, N.Y.) has been selected as the BIG EAST Conference's Scholar Athlete of the Year. He receives a $4,000 postgraduate scholarship. The St. James, N.Y. native plans on attending medical school with plans to become a heart surgeon. He will attend the prestigious Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia.
GREAT SCOTT....Friars' outfielder Mike Scott (So., Darien, Conn.) has had a tremendous rookie season. After sitting out the 1998 season with a knee injury, Scott has been on a tear since day one. The speedy, left fielder leads the nation in hits (105) and triples (12). He has set Providence College records in both categories. His eight triples in BIG EAST play are a league record. Scott has been named or shared BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors five times this season. He leads the Friars with a .429 average with 18 doubles, 12 triples, five homers and 58 rbi's as the Friars' lead off hitter.
BOUNCING BACK...PC started the BIG EAST schedule with a 1-5 record. After that, the Friars went 17-3 in league play to finish at 18-8. The 18 BIG EAST wins are a Providence College record.
RUNS...The Friars have scored ten or more runs in a game 22 times this season and have scored 20 or more runs five times this year.
OFFENSE GALORE...On April 5, 1999 the Friars and the University of Connecticut set several BIG EAST records in PC's 25-18 win. They include:
Most Hits by one team: Providence (30)Most Hits by two teams: 50Most Runs Scored by two teams: 43Runs Scored: Mike Scott (6)Total Bases, two teams: 83, PC (53), UConn (30)At Bats: (7), Mike Scott, Paul Costello and Keith ReedRbi's in a game: Clarke Caudill, UConn (10)SENIOR DAYS....Nine Friars close out their college baseball careers this season. Providence (43)GOING IN CYCLES...Sophomore left fielder Mike Scott hit for the cycle in the Friars' 8-3 win at Boston College on April 21st. The lefthanded hitting lead off man of the Friars led off the game with a double, hit a three-run homer in the second, singled in the fourth and tripled in two runs in the top of the ninth. He was 4-for-6 in the game with a run scored and five rbi's.
MR. CONSISTENT...Several Friars are having outstanding years. One player who doesn't always get the credit he deserves is first baseman Mike O'Keefe (So., Hamden, Conn.). O'Keefe has played in every game this season and is hitting .356 with 17 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs and 61 rbi's. He is just the fourth player in Providence College history to record 60 or more rbi's in a season. O'Keefe has a .980 fielding percentage as he has made eight errors in 408 chances playing first base and left field this season.
TURNING TWO....The Friars have turned 60 double plays this season and have a shot at the school record of 65 set during the 1996 season. First baseman Mike O'Keefe has been involved in 42, shortstop Jamie Athas has been in on 41 and second baseman Paul Costello has taken part in 39 of this season.
TERRIFIC TRIO...Part of the reason for the Friars success this season has been the play of their rookie standouts. Mike Scott is joined by right fielder Neal McCarthy and shortstop Jamie Athas (Fr., Holyoke, Mass.). McCarthy goes into the BIG EAST Tournament ranked third on the team with a .380 average behind Keith Reed (.413) and Scott (.429). He has at team high 20 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 57 rbi's on the year. He has also stolen seven bases in eight tries. McCarthy's 13 home runs are a Providence College rookie record. Athas stepped in at shortstop last fall and has never left. He is hitting .329 with five home runs and 40 rbi's. He leads the Friars with 18 stolen bases in 21 tries. In his first year, he has started and played in 55 of 56 games and has a .919 fielding percentage (22 errors in 271 chances). He has been a part of 41 of the Friars' 60 double plays this season.
HOME RUN HITTER...Keith Reed (Jr., Auburn, Mass.) has a chance to set several offensive marks before the season is over. He goes into the BIG EAST Tournament with 36 career home runs which ties him for first on the school's homer list with Ed Walsh '88. Reed also needs two more home runs to equal the single season mark of 19 set by Bob O'Toole in 1995. His 68 rbi's gives him the single season record at PC as he passes Scott Friedholm who set the mark with 66 last season.
PITCHING MARC....Senior righthander Marc DesRoches set the Providence College single season win mark with his 9-1 win over St. John's on May 2nd. He added to that on May 14th as he picked up his 12th win of the season. The 12 wins breaks the mark of 10 set by Todd Incantalupo in 1995 and 1996. He is 8-0 in the BIG EAST with a league best 2.61 ERA. DesRoches currently ranks 19th in the NCAA in ERA (2.44) and is tied for third in wins with (12).
SAVING GRACE....The Friars' nine saves this season are the most by the team since 1991 when that team's pitchers saved 11 games. The school record is 12 set in 1983 and 1989. Andy Scott (So., Milltown, N.J.) leads PC with three saves on the year including two in BIG EAST action. Other pitchers with saves: Todd Murray (Sr., Andover, Mass) has two while Marc DesRoches, Scott Swanjord (Sr., Fairfax, Va.), Josh Burnham and Mike Stuart (So., Canton, Mass.) have one each.
FRIARS' WORKHORSE...Senior pitcher Josh Burnham set the Providence College record for innings pitched in a season on May 15th with his 7-4 complete game win over Villanova. The Tolland, Connecticut native has now pitched 101.1 innings passing the mark of 94.2 set by Marc DesRoches last season. Burnham is now 9-2 on the year in 14 appearances with eight complete games and a 4.97 ERA. His 65 strikeouts this season tie him for fifth on PC's single season strikeout list.
OFFENSIVE BARRAGE....The 1999 Friars have set a new single season record with 82 home runs breaking the mark of 80 set last season. PC has already scored more runs (539), had more hits (692), more doubles (139), more triples (28) and more total bases (1113) than any team in the school's history. The Friars' team batting average of .345 is also the best ever in the history of the program.
