HOMESTEAD, Fla. - The Providence College Friars dropped an 8-6 decision to the University of Dayton in ten innings on Sunday afternoon at the Homestead Baseball Complex. The loss was the Friars' first of the current spring trip and drops their record to 4-2 on the season. The Friars and Flyers face each other again tonight at 7:00 p.m. in Homestead.
The Friars trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the ninth when they rallied for three runs off starter and winner Jason McFarland. Mike O'Keefe led off with a double. Keith Reed got on via an error. Jeremy Sweet was hit by a pitch to load the bases and designated hitter Neal McCarthy delivered a two-run double to make it 3-2. Catcher Dan Conway then drove in pinch runner Jason Hairston with a sacrifice fly to send the game to extra innings.
PC couldn't hold it in the top of the tenth though. With sophomore Mike Stuart on in relief, first baseman Aaron Reesh drilled a one-out single. Designated hitter Brooks Vogel was hit by a pitch and third baseman Pat Rasey followed with an rbi single. That brought in senior Todd Murray who gave up a double and two singles to send the Friars into the home half of the tenth trailing, 8-3.
In the tenth, center fielder Mike Scott led off with a single. Paul Costello was hit by a pitch and junior leftfielder Mike O'Keefe followed with a three-run homer off reliever Mark Pritchard to cut the Dayton lead to 8-6. The homer was O'Keefe's first of the year. Righthander Shawn Landis relieved Pritchard and after a single by Reed, he retired the Friars on a strike out, a pop up and a fly to left.
Stuart took the loss to fall to 0-1 while McFarland got the win and Landis the save for Dayton.
