PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Johnny Hemsley scored 24 points, including two key jumpers in the final two minutes, as No. 16 Miami held off Providence 69-65 Saturday.

After Providence used a 16-0 run to take a 53-51 lead, Miami (17-5, 11-3 Big East) came back. Tim James hit a foul-line jumper to put the Hurricanes ahead for good at 58-57 with 6:45 remaining, and Hemsley's two jumpers kept them in the lead.

Providence (14-10, 7-6) was paced by Jamel Thomas, who had 16, and Justin Farley and Jamaal Camah, who had 11 each. James had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Miami.

The game was delayed for several minutes with 4:28 left when a Providence cheerleader fell during a routine and had to be taken off the court on a stretcher.

Providence didn't score for the first 6:30 of the second half, falling behind 51-37.

The Friars rallied even though Thomas, the Big East's leading scorer coming into the game, was on the bench for the entire run. Little-used backup center Leon Brisport helped spark the run with a three-point play.

With the win, their fourth in a row, the Hurricanes moved to 12 games above .500 for the first time since 1965. Miami is 7-1 on the road in Big East play.

Miami took a 14-6 lead, getting three-point plays from James and Mario Bland.

But the Friars outside shooting soon brought them back. They took the lead, 21-20, on Thomas' 3-pointer.

Miami kept going inside against the smaller Friars, and regained the lead at halftime 41-37, getting 15 points from Hemsley and 14 points and eight rebounds from James.
