VILLANOVA, Pa.-The Providence College Friars scored early and often on Sunday afternoon at Villanova, banging out 19 hits, including five home runs on the way to a 23-3 BIG EAST win over the Villanova Wildcats at McGeehan Field.
Sophomore designated hitter, Coley O'Donnell led the Friars with a pair of home runs and five rbi's in four at-bats. Second baseman Paul Costello banged out four hits with four rbi's and Angelo Ciminiello and Scott Friedholm each had three hits in the win. Every Friar starter had at least one hit off of seven Villanova pitchers. Scott Friedholm, Costello and Bryan Tamul also homered for the Friars in the game. First baseman Rick Welsh had his third homer of the season for Villanova.
The win improves PC to 16-7 overall and makes the Friars 3-1 in BIG EAST play. Villanova goes to 10-7 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
Junior Rob Corraro pitched seven strong innings giving up three runs on seven hits to improve to 2-3 on fhe season. Brian Buckingham took the loss for Villanova.
PC got three runs in the top of the first on Friedholm's three-run homer and never looked back. The Friars scored 16 of the 23 runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.
The Friars are next in action on Tuesday, March 31st when they host Holy Cross at Hendricken Field beginning at 3:00 pm.
