PROVIDENCE, R.I....The hotting hitting Providence College Friars had their bats cooled by University of Connecticut lefthander Josh Santos on Monday afternoon at PC's Hendricken Field. The junior from Easht Haven, Connecticut dominated the Friars striking out 15 and walking two while giving up just three hits in the 6-1 BIG EAST win over Providence.
The win drops PC to 13-6 overall, 0-1 in BIG EAST play while Connecticut goes to 5-4 on the year and 1-0 in league play.
Santos had a no-hitter for five-and-one-third innings before Jason Hairston scratched out an infield hit behind shortstop. Hairston added another hit in the eighth and Keith Reed had his tenth homer of the season for the only run Santos would give up.
UConn supported their pitcher with three homers in the game, two by first baseman Willie Mercado and one by designated hitter Brian Packin. Packin's two run homer in the bottom of the seventh broke open a 2-1 game and sent PC starter Marc DesRoches to the showers. Packin also had a first inning sacrifice fly to stake Santos to a 1-0 lead in the game.
Providence returns to action on Tuesday afternoon at Hendricken Field when the Friars host the University of Massachusetts Minutemen in a 2:30 p.m. game.
