PROVIDENCE, R.I....The University of Massachusetts Minutemen used an eight-run fifth inning to break open a close game against Providence on the way to a 14-8 victory on Tuedsay at PC's Hendricken Field.
UMass shortstop Bryan Mazzaferro broke open the game with his first home run of the year, a fifth inning grand slam that made the score 11-2. The Friars couldn't stop the top three in the UMass lineup, Shaun Skeffington, Mazzaferrro and Muchie Dagliare who combined to go 6-11 with nine rbi's in the game.
Skeffington had a double and a triple with a pair of rbi's, Mazzaferrro had a triple and a homerun with his four rbi's and Dagliare gave the Minutemen their first lead of the game in the third inning with a two-run homer to go along with a sacrifice fly that was dropped and opened the fifth inning flood gates for PC.
Rob Corraro took the loss for Providence, pitching 4.1 innings while giving up eight runs, four earned and seven hits. He falls to 1-3 on the year. Travis Veracka pitched six innings to pick up his second victory of the year.
Providence was led offensively by Angelo Ciminiello who hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third for his sixth of the season. He also added a double and a triple for a 3-5 day at the plate. Freshman first baseman, Mike O'Keefe also had two hits for the Friars and Keith Reed drove in two runs with a single in the sixth inning.
