PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (8-7, 3-5) HOCKEY NOTES:
FRIARS SPLIT WITH MERRIMACK... Providence College posted a 1-1 mark in two HOCKEY EAST games against Merrimack on December 3-4. On December 3, the Friars earned their sixth consecutive win with a 4-1 victory against Merrimack at Schneider Arena. Freshman Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio) led the Friar offense with his first collegiate two-goal game. Senior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta) and sophomore Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) also scored for PC. Freshman goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) made 30 stops in the win. The following night, PC's six-game winning streak came to an end as Merrimack defeated PC, 4-2, in North Andover, Mass. Freshman Jon DiSalvatore (So. Windsor, Conn.) scored both Friar goals and recorded his first collegiate multiple-goal game. Schaefer made 22 stops in goal.
ROOKIE SUCCESS... The Friars have received strong contributions from the team's rookies this season. In PC's two games against Merrimack on December 3-4, five of the team's six goals were scored by rookies and freshman Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) played in net both nights. Rookies Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio) and Jon DiSalvatore (So. Windsor, Conn.) each netted two goals against Merrimack and Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) added one tally. Fregoe is third on the team in scoring with 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 14 games and DiSalvatore is fifth on the team in scoring with nine points (five goals, four assists) in 15 games. Schaefer has been PC's top goaltender this season, posting a 4-2 record, a 2.15 goals against average and a .933 save percentage.
HOME SWEET HOME - FRIARS WIN 250th AT SCHNEIDER... The Friars have posted a 5-1 mark at home this season. The Friars' 4-1 win over Merrimack on December 3 was the team's 250th all-time victory at Schneider Arena. Now in their 27th season of competition in Schneider Arena, the Friars' all-time record in the facility is 250-156-27 (.609).
FRIARS WIN SIX STRAIGHT... Although the Friars' six-game winning streak was a season high for the squad, the PC team record for consecutive victories is nine. The 1982-83 Friars won nine straight games. In fact, the 1982-83 Friars won more games than any other PC squad, finishing the season with a 33-10-0 mark. The all-time Friar record for an unbeaten streak is 10 games, which was set by the 1989-90 team. The squad was 9-0-1 over a 10-game span. The 1989-90 Friars finished the season with a 22-10-3 record.
INJURY REPORT... PC had several key players miss games this weekend due to injuries. Senior center Jerry Keefe sprained his ankle in PC's 5-4 win against Colorado College on November 26. He has missed the last three games. Sophomore center Peter Fregoe suffered a bruised thigh in PC's 4-1 win against Merrimack on December 3. He has missed one game. Junior left wing Heath Gordon did not dress for the two games against Merrimack due to the flu. All three players are listed as day-to-day.
FRIARS ESTABLISH TWO RECORDS FOR PENALTIES... In the first period of Friday's 4-1 win against Merrimack, the Friars established two records for penalty minutes in a period. The Friars' established an all-time team record with 63 penalty minutes in the first period. The old PC record for penalty minutes in a period was 60, which was established on October 16, 1993 in the third period vs. Army. The team also established a HOCKEY EAST regular-season record for penalty minutes in a period with 63. The former record for penalty minutes in a period was 53 set by Merrimack versus Northeastern on November 28, 1989.
THIS WEEK... The Friars will play their final game prior to the holiday break when they host the Dartmouth Big Green in a non-conference matchup on Friday, December 10 at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
THE PROVIDENCE-DARTMOUTH SERIES... Friday's game will be the 22nd meeting between the two schools. Providence College holds a 13-8 lead in its series against Dartmouth. In the most recent meeting between the two teams, Dartmouth defeated the Friars, 6-5, in overtime on December 11, 1998 at Thompson Arena. PC's last win against the Big Green was a 5-2 victory on January 21, 1997 at Schneider Arena. The two teams first met on March 5, 1953 with Dartmouth defeating PC, 6-2, at Davis Rink.
AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... The Friars have posted 5-2 record against the Big Green at Schneider Arena. PC won the first meeting between the two schools at Schneider Arena, 10-7, on February 11, 1974. The Friars' last win against Dartmouth at Schneider Arena was a 5-2 victory on January 21, 1997. The last time Dartmouth defeated PC at Schneider Arena was February 5, 1980 (5-3).
LAST SEASON AGAINST DARTMOUTH... Dartmouth won the only meeting between the two teams last season, 6-5, in overtime at Thompson Arena. Doug Sheppard, Jon Coe, Troy Lake, Cole Gendreau and Jerry Keefe all scored for the Friars. Mark Kane made 22 stops in the loss for the Friars.
DAVE PETERS RETURNS TO SCHNEIDER... Dartmouth Assistant Coach Dave Peters returns to Schneider Arena on Friday to face his former squad for the first time. Peters, who was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Friars for five seasons (1993-98), recruited about half of all the players on the Friar roster this season. He spent last season as the head coach and general manager of the Danville Wings of the NAHL.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE VS. NON-LEAGUE OPPONENTS... This season, the Friars have compiled a 5-2 record against non-league opponents. PC has a 2-1 mark against CCHA teams, a 1-0 record versus ECAC teams and a 2-1 record against WCHA teams. In 1998-99, the Friars recorded a 6-4 mark against non-league opponents.
