TROY, N.Y.. -- Providence freshman Jon DiSalvatore tallied two goals to the lead the Friars to a 3-1 victory over Union College in the opening game of the HSBC Hockey Tournament at the Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y., on Wednesday, December 30.
After a long break for the holidays, both teams looked tentative as they skated to a scoreless first period in which the Friars outshot the Skating Dutchmen, 14-10.
PC netted the first goal of the game at the 4:12 mark of the second period. Friar forward Adam Lee won a faceoff in the offensive end which DiSalvatore wristed in past Union netminder Brandon Snee. Union took advantage of an three-on-one break in to even the game at 1-1 when Jeff Wilson one timed a shot past Friar goaltender Boyd Ballard with 2:21 remaining in the second period.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until DiSalvatore tallied the gamewinner as he deflected in a pass from four feet in front of the net with 1:28 remaining in the game. Drew Omicioli added an empty net goal to seal the win for Providence at the 19:27 mark.
Ballard recorded 36 saves in the win, including 16 in the third period. Snee played strong in goal for Union, recording 37 saves.
With the win, Providence raised its record to 10-7 overall, while Union fell to 5-10 overall.
The Friars will return to action at the HSBC Hockey Tournament on Thursday, December 30 at 8:30 p.m. against the winner of the RPI or Bowling Green game.
