PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rick Mickens scored 18 points and John Tice added 15, including the last six, to lead Central Connecticut State past Providence 54-50 Tuesday.
It was the first win for the Blue Devils (6-2) over a Big East opponent in 17 tries.
Erron Maxey led Providence (4-5) with game-high totals of 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Providence led 36-31 on a putback by Romuald Augustin with 12 minutes left. But Mickens then connected on three 3-pointers in the next 10 minutes as the Blue Devils pulled ahead 48-47 with two minutes left.
The lead then changed hands twice before Maxey tied the score with one of two free throws with 59 seconds left. Tice then made a layup with 42 seconds left, missed two free throws, then clinched the win by sinking two free throws with 2.1 seconds left.
Central Connecticut State held Providence to 29 percent field-goal shooting for the game including 24 percent (9 of 37) in the second half.
The Friars connected on just 5 of 24 3-point attempts and 7 of 16 foul shots.
The Blue Devils' biggest lead was 12 points, 26-14, in the first half before Providence trimmed the lead to 29-26 at halftime.
