PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (7-6, 2-4) HOCKEY NOTES:
FRIARS POST WINS OVER CORNELL, COLORADO COLLEGE AND DENVER... The Providence College Friars won three games last week against Cornell, seventh-ranked Colorado College and Denver. On November 23, PC earned a 3-2 victory against ECAC foe Cornell at Schneider Arena. PC's goals were scored by freshman Devin Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan), senior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta) and senior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario). Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) registered a season-high 40 stops in the win. On November 26, sophomore Drew Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) led the Friar offense with two goals in a 5-4 win over seventh-ranked Colorado College. It was the team's first win over a top-10 opponent since January 22, 1999. PC's other goals were scored by Pisani, freshman Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio). Freshman Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) made 36 stops in his third win of the season. On November 27, the Friars extended their win streak to five consecutive games with a 7-3 victory against Denver at Schneider Arena. Pisani (two goals, two assists) and Sheppard (one goal, three assists) led PC with four points each. Rask, sophomore Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.), junior Matt Libby (Saco, Maine) and freshman Doug Wright (Kamsack, Saskatchewan) also scored for the Friars. Ballard registered 27 stops in the win.
PISANI HEATS UP FOR FRIARS... Senior left wing Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta) registered seven points (four goals, three assists) in PC's three wins last week. In the Friars' 7-3 win against Denver on November 27, Pisani scored two goals and added two assists. For Pisani it marked the 13th time in his career he has registered three or more points in a game and the fifth time he has recorded four or more points in a contest. He has posted five multiple-point games this season and 34 in his career at Providence. Pisani now ranks 24th on the PC all-time scoring chart with 130 points (48 goals, 82 assists) in 122 games. He also ranks 19th all-time in assists with 82. Pisani is second on the team in scoring this season with 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 13 games. Last season, Pisani finished first on the team in assists (37) and second on the squad in scoring (51 points). He is a 1996 eighth-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers.
SHEPPARD ON A TEAR... Senior captain Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario) registered eight points (two goals, six assists) in PC's wins over Cornell, seventh-ranked Colorado College and Denver last week. On November 23, Sheppard scored the game-winning goal with 2:42 remaining in the game and notched one assist in the Friars' 3-2 win over ECAC foe Cornell at Schneider Arena. On November 26, the senior captain recorded two assists in PC's 5-4 win over seventh-ranked Colorado College. The following night, Sheppard recorded four points (one goal, three assists) in the Friars' 7-3 win against WCHA foe Denver. Sheppard has been an integral part of the Friars' five game winning streak. He has registered 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in the team's five straight wins. Sheppard leads the Friars in scoring (19 points), goals (10) and power-play goals (eight).
BALLARD RECORDS TWO WINS... Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) made 67 saves in two of the Friars' three wins last week. Ballard made a season-high 40 saves in PC's 3-2 win over Cornell on November 23 at Schneider Arena. On November 27, Ballard started his second game of the week and recorded 27 stops in a 7-3 win against Denver. Ballard has started nine of the team's 13 games this season.
ROOKIE IMPACT... Sophomore Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) notched four points in PC's three wins last week. On November 26, Fregoe registered one assist in the Friars' 5-4 win over seventh-ranked Colorado College. The following night, the sophomore sensation registered three points (one goal, two assists), scored the game-winning goal and had a plus/minus rating of 5 in the Friars' 7-3 victory over Denver. For Fregoe it was his first collegiate three-point game and third multiple-point effort. He is third on the team in scoring with 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 13 games. Fregoe, who is playing his first season of college hockey, came to Providence after one of the most successful seasons ever in the USHL. Fregoe tallied 103 points last season for the Des Moines Buccaneers. For his efforts he was named USA Hockey's Junior Player of the Year, the USHL Most Valuable Player, the USHL Top Forward and First Team All-USHL.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE VS. NON-LEAGUE OPPONENTS... This season, the Friars have compiled a 5-2 record against non-league opponents. PC has a 2-1 mark against CCHA teams, a 1-0 record versus ECAC teams and a 2-1 record against WCHA teams. In 1998-99, the Friars recorded a 6-4 mark against non-league opponents.
THIS WEEK... The Friars will return to HOCKEY EAST action with a home-and-home series against Merrimack. On December 3, PC will host the Warriors. The following night, the Friars will travel to Merrimack. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
THE PROVIDENCE-MERRIMACK SERIES... Friday's game will be the 75th meeting between the two schools. Providence College holds a 58-14-2 lead in its series against Merrimack. The Friars have a 9-1-0 record against the Warriors in the last 10 games. In the most recent meeting between the two teams, Providence defeated Merrimack, 4-3, in overtime on February 19 at Schneider Arena. PC's last loss to the Warriors was a 3-2 defeat at the Volpe Complex on Dec. 3, 1998. The two teams first met on Feb. 13, 1960 with PC defeating Merrimack, 7-1, at the Billerica Forum.
AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... The Friars have posted 22-7-1 record against the Warriors at Schneider Arena. PC won the first meeting between the two schools at Schneider Arena, 4-2, on Jan. 20, 1973. The Friars' last win against Merrimack at Schneider Arena was a 4-3 overtime victory on February 19, 1999. The last time Merrimack defeated PC at Schneider Arena was Nov. 5, 1994 (4-3).
AT THE VOLPE COMPLEX... PC holds a 15-3-1 record against the Warriors at the Volpe Complex. PC won the first meeting between the two schools at the Volpe Complex, 10-3, on Nov. 28, 1972. The Friars' last win at the Volpe Complex was a 6-4 decision on Feb. 28, 1998. The last time Merrimack defeated PC at the Volpe Complex was December 3, 1998 (3-2).
LAST SEASON AGAINST MERRIMACK... The Providence College Friars posted a 2-1 mark against Merrimack last season. On Dec. 3, 1998, PC was defeated by Merrimack, 3-2, at the Volpe Complex. With the win, Merrimack ended a 10-game winless streak and a nine-game losing streak against the Friars. Jerry Keefe and Mike Omicioli each scored for PC. Mark Kane made 34 saves in the loss. On Dec. 4, 1998, PC earned a 3-2 win against the Warriors in overtime at Schneider Arena. Omicioli tallied the game-winning goal for the Friars at 1:09 of the overtime period. Matt Libby and Fernando Pisani also scored for PC. Kane recorded 28 saves in the win. In the final meeting between the two teams last season, the Friars earned their second overtime victory against the Warriors, 4-3. Jon Cameron scored 30 seconds into the extra period to give the Friars the win. Jason Ialongo scored two goals and Josh MacNevin also added a goal for PC. Boyd Ballard registered 28 stops in the win.
