DURHAM, N.H. -- The UNH Wildcats defeated the Providence College Friars, 3-2, in overtime HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, November 12 in Durham, N.H. UNH defenseman Sean Austin fired a shot through a scrum that found the back of the net at 1:31 of overtime to give the Wildcats the win.
For the third consecutive game, the Friars gave up the first two goals of the contest in the first 10 minutes of the first period. UNH's Jim Abbott crashed the net on a two-on-one break in and knocked in a rebound past Friar netminder Nolan Schaefer at 1:23 of the first period. The Wildcats increased their lead to 2-0 when Lanny Gare backhanded in a shot from five feet in front of the net at 9:59 of the first period. Freshman defenseman Shawn Weiman put the Friars on the scoreboard at 11:25 when he wristed in his own rebound past UNH goaltender Ty Conklin.
PC dominated the second period, outshooting the Wildcats, 11-3. Fernando Pisani netted the only goal of the second period when he finished off a two-on-one break in with a wicked snap shot from the top of the right circle that beat Conklin low to the right side while shorthanded at 16:38.
Neither team was able to score in the third period, forcing the overtime period.
With the win, New Hampshire raised its record to 6-2-0 overall and in 3-0 in HOCKEY EAST, while Providence fell to 2-5 overall and in 0-3 league play.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 13 for their home opener against the University of New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m. at PC's Schneider Arena.
