OXFORD, Ohio. -- Miami University defeated the Providence College men's hockey team, 5-2, on Saturday, October 23 in Oxford, Ohio. The Red Hawks scored three consecutive second period goals that proved to be the difference in the second game of a two-game series at Oxford.
Miami took a quick 1-0 lead when Danny Stewart wristed in a rebound from eight feet in front of the net past Friar goaltender Boyd Ballard during a power play at 3:20 of the first period. The Friars wasted little time tying the game as Heath Gordon poked in a rebound through a scrum at 4:57 of the first period.
Gregor Krajnc started the scoring flurry for Miami and gave the Red Hawks a 2-1 lead at 5:30 of the second period when he one-timed a shot from in front of the net that beat Ballard high to the glove side. Krajnc increased the Red Hawk lead with his second goal of period when he broke down the right side and fired in a wrist shot from 12 feet. Miami scored its third straight goal of the second period when Mike Glumac came out of the right corner and lifted a high shot past Ballard on a power-play at the 15:56 mark. Jon DiSalvatore helped the Friars cut into the Red Hawk lead during a power play at 18:41 of the second period as he snapped in a shot high over Miami goaltender David Burleigh.
Dusting Whitecotton scored an insurance goal for the Red Hawks at 15:17 of the third period on a power-play when he stuffed home a shot into the right corner of the net.
With the win, Miami raised its record to 4-1-1 overall while Providence fell to 2-2.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, October 30 in their HOCKEY EAST opener at Boston University at 7:00 p.m.
