Softball Travels To North Carolina To Compete in the UNCW Tournament

The Friars will play five games between Feb. 23- Feb. 25.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team (1-4) will travel to Wilmington, N.C. to compete in the UNCW Tournament hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington from Feb. 23- Feb. 25. Providence will open tournament play on Friday, Feb. 23 against UMBC and Merrimack College. The Friars will face George Mason on Saturday, Feb. 24 before playing Kent State and UNCW on Sunday, Feb. 25.
 
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
Providence opened the regular season posting a 1-4 record in the Marti Gras Mambo in Youngsville, La. The Friars earned a 9-1 win over Southern University on Feb.10.
 
Junior Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.) recorded a team-high four runs, one home run and one RBI over five games last weekend. Junior Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) brought power to the lineup, tallying four hits and two runs with 11 at-bats. In her rookie season, freshman Brianna De La Fuente (Metuchen, N.J.) posted a team-best three RBIs, two hits and one run.
 
Sophomore Riley Quirk (Holden, Mass.) and junior Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) pitched 7.2 and 9.0 innings, respectively. Walter went 1-0 in the circle, allowing seven hits while striking out five batters.
 
SCOUTING UMBC
The Retrievers enter the weekend 1-1 after playing a doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Feb. 16.
 
Freshman Ella Squaires posted a .750 batting average and a 1.125 slugging percentage over the two games. Jerzie Nutile and Kya Matter each pitched six innings and struck out five and six batters, respectively.
 
SCOUTING MERRIMACK
The Warriors enter the tournament 1-4 after competing in the Bash In Boro in Statesboro, Ga. From Feb.9 – Feb. 11.
 
Ellen Hubbard recorded a .353 batting average and scored four runs. Madison Cerpa posted a team-high four runs over the five games. Madie Fornwalt and Cecelia Imbimbo lead Merrimack in the circle pitching 15.0 and 10.1 innings, respectively. Fornwalt leads the team with nine strikeouts.
 
SCOUTING GEORGE MASON
The Patriots enter the UNCW Tournament with a 2-6 overall record. The team most recently competed at the Weiler Orthodontics Invitational last weekend (Feb. 16- Feb. 18).
 
Rachel Warrens leads the team with a .381 batting average, .571 slugging percentage and a .409 on-base percentage. Warrens holds the team lead in runs (five) and hits (eight). Harlowe Nigh and Carly Cooper lead the Patriots in the circle pitching 13 and 23.2 innings, respectively. They have struck out 22 batters combined.
 
SCOUTING UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA WILMINGTON
The Seahawks enter this weekend's tournament with a 5-4 overall record, most recently finishing with a 2-2 result from the UNF/JU Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla., last weekend (Feb. 16- Feb. 18).
Skylar Stockton has a team-high .500 batting average, .750 slugging percentage and a .621 on-base percentage. In 20 at-bats, Stockton has recorded 10 hits and five runs. Emily Winstead and Carrigan Ewers spearhead the Seahawks' pitching staff with a combined 13 strikeouts, pitching 23.2 and 9.2 innings, respectively.  
 
 
ON DECK
The Friars will travel to Towson, Md., to compete in the DeMarini Tiger Clash hosted by Townson University between March 1 to March 3. It will be the last tournament of the regular season for Providence. The Friars will play five games throughout the weekend against UMass Lowell (Mar. 1, Mar.3), Towson University (Mar. 1) and Howard University (Mar. 2, Mar. 3).
