PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team shutout the Monmouth Hawks, 2-0, today (Aug. 30) at the Ray Treacy Track in Providence, R.I. Junior forward Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.) showed his dominance again, as she scored two goals for the second-straight game.
Steeves didn't waste any time in the opening minutes of the game, as he tapped the ball into the bottom right of the net just outside of the six-yard box in the sixth minute of play. The Friars (2-0-0) maintained a 1-0 lead for the rest of the half. Providence looked dominant the rest of the half against an unresponsive Monmouth (0-2-0) squad.
As the second half got underway, junior Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) had a clear shot at goal, fired the ball high and hit the post. The ball rebounded back to Steeves who headed the ball into the goal for a 2-0 Friar lead (48:46). The goal marked Steeves' fourth goal of the season in just two games. Steeves has scored a total of six goals over the last three games he has played for Providence, including the 2014 NCAA College Cup Semifinal against UCLA.
Providence's red-shirt sophomore goalkeeper Ben Seguljic (Rye Brook, N.Y.) made his only save of the game with seven minutes remaining. The Hawks' Colin Stripling fired a shot at goal just above the six-yard box which found the hands of Seguljic. It marked the first shutout of his career.
The Friars will be back in action next week at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4 when they travel to Holy Cross.
