Sharaud Curry Named BIG EAST Rookie Of The Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College freshman point guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) was named BIG EAST men's basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday, February 6. He is the second Friar freshman to earn the honor this season as forward Geoff McDermott was named Rookie of the Week on December 27.

Curry was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on February 6 for his impressive play last week for the Friars. In two games, the rookie averaged 16 points, 4.0 assists, 3.5 steals and 3.5 rebounds. He shot 90 percent from the free-throw line (9-10) and 50 percent from the field (10-20), including 42.9 percent from three-point territory. He scored 13 points versus Seton Hall on February 1 and 19 points in a win versus St. John's on February 4. Other impressive statistics from his two games last week were six steals against Seton Hall and five assists, four rebounds and a 6-6 performance from the free-throw line against St. John's.

Curry, who has started 16 of the team's 20 games this season, ranks third on the team in scoring (11.5 ppg). He leads the team in assists with 73 (3.7 apg).

Prior to attending Providence, Curry played for Wheeler High School (2002-05) in Marietta, Ga. Curry, one of the top players in Georgia last year, was named Georgia Sports Writers Class AAAAA Player of the Year after averaging 21 ppg and 7.0 assists per game as a senior. Curry is the son of Stephanie and Morris Curry.

The Friars, 10-10, return to action on Tuesday, February 7 at DePaul. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. E.S.T.
